Got a stump that’s got to go? We’ve got your back!
Stump Grinding
Stump grinding is a very common service where a tree stump is removed by grinding it down. This grinding process effectively turns the stump into a pile of mulch, which can then be used elsewhere in your yard or hauled away.
Grinding removes the entire visible part of the stump, as well as six to eight inches of the stump / roots below the surface. Since tree roots can run much deeper and wider than that, stump grinding will leave many of the tree’s roots intact.
This is considerably less expensive than having the entire stump and root system of the tree excavated, and if you’re looking to re-seed your lawn with grass, or to just cover over the area with dirt, stump grinding is almost certainly the most economical solution for you.
If you’d like the whole stump removed, roots and all, continue reading below for a more comprehensive option.
Stump Removal
Sometimes grinding down a stump isn’t your best option. While grinding a stump down below the ground and covering it with soil will restore the cosmetic appearance of your yard, stump grinding doesn’t do anything with the underlying root system of the tree.
Depending on the type, size, and age of the tree, that underlying root system can be considerably large. And while we typically think of roots as something that sustains the life of the tree, in a very real way the tree also sustains the life of the roots. Once you remove the top of the tree and grind down the stump, the roots will die and slowly start to decay.
That decay will change the acidity of the surrounding soil. And the presence of the large root structures – up to 5 times the diameter of the previous tree – can make it harder for new things to grow. If you’re planting grass, the roots won’t be a problem – but the soil acidity may require you to use treatments like lime on your grass. If you’re trying to grow another tree, however, that root system may make it very difficult for your new tree to thrive.
This is why we offer complete stump removal services. We can excavate the entire stump, roots and all, leaving your yard in the best possible condition for growing new things. This is obviously more labor-intensive than a simple stump grinding, but it may be worth it in the long run.
